Recent reports from abroad indicate that on Thursday, the API services for developers from ChatGPT, Sora, and OpenAI faced a service outage lasting over four hours, drawing considerable attention. OpenAI disclosed that their services began experiencing severe disruptions from 11 AM Pacific Time. Fortunately, by 3:16 PM Pacific Time, the services started to recover gradually. The service interruption is a familiar issue for ChatGPT's loyal users, as a similar problem occurred earlier this month.
On Thursday afternoon, when TechCrunch attempted to access ChatGPT and Sora, they encountered error messages. OpenAI explained on their official status page that the widespread outage was caused by an issue with one of their upstream suppliers, though no further details were provided. As of 2:05 PM Pacific Time, OpenAI reported that ChatGPT had partially restored functionality, although users might still face difficulties in loading chat histories. Thankfully, by 3:16 PM Pacific Time, Sora had successfully resumed operations. OpenAI vowed to work diligently to fully restore ChatGPT and its API services as soon as possible.
It's worth noting that this is the second service disruption for OpenAI in December. Two weeks prior, OpenAI attributed the fault to an issue with a newly launched telemetry service, which lasted around six hours, significantly longer than the usual one to two hours. Despite the recent fault triggering concerns, other popular services using the OpenAI API, such as Perplexity and Apple's Intelligence integration with Siri, appeared to be unaffected, as evidenced by updates on the companies' status pages and TechCrunch's tests.
